Hat Dum (Dum Singing Festival)

E-mail Print PDF

Communes of Phuc Le and Pha Le (Thuy Nguyen district) are considered motherland of Hat Dum in Hai Phong. 'Hat Dum', i.e. folk songs simultaneously exchanged between two groups of singers - men and women, is very abundant in melody: Trong Quan (Army drum), Co La (waving stork), Sa mac (desert), Ly giao duyen.

In the festival, when the women's side immediately passes a song and the men's side is late in the response, the men's side is regarded as loser. In Phuc Le, Hat Dum is associated with 'Hoi mo mat' - Face Opening Festival. Phuc Le's girls around year cover their faces by shawls, just open their black eyes like grains of longan. The festival is also the days for girls at beauty contests, acting as human chess girls. Uncovering the shawls, smooth white faces with pink lips as pomegranate flower appear, making festival more passionately and exciting.

Listen to the girls' request singing:

Three Mounts, Four water spaces and One Piece of Land

If you can explain what they mean, I will follow you unconditionally

The boys reply:

Three mountains are mountains, Four water spaces are rivers

One piece of land is paddy field, Who follows me is very you?

And then a people on the left separates from the group to take the girl[1][1][1]s hand and sings:

I find you both pretty and beautiful

I feel you agreed so I take your wrist

Holding your wrist, I ask myself

Why it is so creamy and round?

The boy tells her of his difficulties:

I went out at night because of you

Although I fell down some times, I didn't feel painful

You are the reason of my visit

My hurry made me fall and hurt my knees

The girls also express their feeling:

Too much of love each other

Climbing up the hill I forget tiredness, Eating ginger I don't feel bitter.
Most girls and boys later become wives and husbands of each other thanks to their beautiful songs and dances. So, Hat Dum is always an attractive and exciting festival, it becomes a characteristic of traditional and cultural treasure trove in the areas.
